Holoikauaua

Holoikauaua (Pearl and Hermes) is a true atoll that is primarily underwater and has numerous islets, seven of which are above sea level. While total land area is only around 0.22 square miles, the reef area is huge, over 450 square miles.

  • Holoikauaua is named for the endangered Hawaiian monk seal - described in Hawaiian as a ʻdog-like animal that swims in the rough.'

  • The Hawaiian monk seal frequents local waters and hauls out on the beaches of several of the northwestern islands of Hawaiʻi.
